Somatic Experiencing
Nervous System Regulation
A BODY ORIENTED APPROACH TO HEALING TRAUMA
“Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence.” ~ Peter Levine
Healing Through Nervous System Regulation
Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented method for the resolution of trauma. Trauma, or more broadly, incidents that dysregulate the nervous system, can get “stuck” in our physiology. These stuck states are more widely known as fight, flight, or freeze states. When our bodies are stuck in these states we can often experience disruptions such as feeling fidgety or anxious, easily irritated, slowed down, numb, or difficulty experiencing joy. After a significant traumatic event or years of cumulative stress our bodies can begin to show physical signs of emotional distress such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowl syndrome, migraines, or fibromyalgia.
The SE approach helps clients expand resilience by gently completing thwarted motor responses that were intended for protection during the time of the trauma event. By brining completion to the “stuckness” the energy that is bound in the system- either causing anxiety or being used to supress your system causing depression can begin to move with ease and flow through your system. This allows your life energy to be used for living!
